What you really need to know about a Mac

We regularly receive questions from customers who have bought an Apple device for the first time. These are questions about things that may seem obvious to experienced Apple users, but not for beginners. In this blog, we help you out with the most common product questions.

‘How do I turn on my iMac?’

You can turn on an iMac by pressing the power button. This is a round button on the back of the iMac. Of course, make sure that the power cable is connected. You can turn on a MacBook with the button in the top right corner of the keyboard.

‘What is VoiceOver and how do I use it?’

VoiceOver is a built-in screen reader that gives a spoken description of what is happening on the screen. This allows users with a visual impairment to control their computer. When you first set up your MacBook or iMac, you can enable VoiceOver right away by pressing Command + F5. Press Command + F5 again to turn VoiceOver off. You can press Escape to learn more about it. While setting up your iPhone or iPad, you can enable or disable VoiceOver by pressing the home button three times.

If you've already fully set up your Apple device, you can enable or disable VoiceOver on your MacBook or iMac by pressing Command + F5 again. On your iPhone or iPad, you can enable or disable VoiceOver by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver. Of course, you can also turn on VoiceOver using Siri.

‘Where is the right-click on my Mac?’

At first glance, it may seem that you can’t use a right-click on a wireless mouse or trackpad. How can you right-click if there’s only one button? On an Apple mouse or trackpad, you can still "right-click" even if there’s no visible right mouse button.

On Macs, right-clicking is called secondary clicking. You can enable secondary clicking on an Apple trackpad by going to System Preferences > Trackpad. Check the Secondary click option and then choose your preferred option: click with two fingers, click in the bottom right corner, or click in the bottom left corner. In this window, you can also set up other trackpad features. To set up secondary clicking on an Apple Magic Mouse, go to System Preferences > Mouse. After checking Secondary click, you can choose to click on the right side or click on the left side.

‘How do I download Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie, and GarageBand?’

In 2013, Apple introduced that anyone who bought a new Mac, iPhone, or iPad would get the applications Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie, and GarageBand for free. If you bought a second-hand or refurbished Apple device, you had to pay for these apps. Luckily, since 2017, everyone can download these apps for free. On your device, go to the App Store > click on Search > type in the name of the app you want > click Download next to the app name > click Install.
